Children's feet grow at a rapid rate. Given this, finding sandals, trainers and boots that offer the perfect fit for a growing family is particularly important. To ensure retailer and consumer satisfaction, the sizes indicated by manufacturers must be accurate. TÜV SÜD's 'Tested for Fit' certification mark supports manufacturers in reaching this goal and helps them to stand out effectively from their competitors in an increasingly demanding market environment.
Outgrown again! A common problem where children's shoes are concerned. Buying new shoes for children is no easy feat. While children cannot really say whether their shoes fit correctly, basing their decisions mainly on design and colour, well-fitting shoes are a must for the healthy development of children's feet. "When parents cannot rely on the sizes indicated on children's footwear, shopping for new shoes can turn into a complete gamble", says Sven Engbert, head of TÜV SÜD's Softlines business area in Germany.
Given that an increasing number of parents shop for children's shoes online, the accuracy of the sizes indicated takes on added significance. More choice available in less time, no specialist children's shoe shop in the vicinity, very individual wishes regarding shoe colour, all these motivate young and old to purchase their shoes on the World Wide Web. "The more people shop for shoes in online stores, the more important it is that the sizes indicated on the shoes are really accurate", emphasizes Engbert. "Correct sizes avoid disappointed consumers and help retailers to reduce the rate of returns."
The "Tested for Fit" certification mark offered by TÜV SÜD Product Service is a signal of reliable sizing. Before the product professionals award the certification mark, they carry out various tests on site in the production facilities and in TÜV SÜD's testing laboratories: To ensure the size indicated on the shoe will provide superior fit and comfort later on, both the shoe last (the mould around which shoes are formed) and the boots, clogs or slip-ons themselves undergo thorough testing. In this context, TÜV SÜD's footwear pros focus on a host of details including the exact width and length. Engbert explains, "By checking the shoe lasts at an early stage of production, we can avoid the entire production run being affected by incorrect sizing." The certification mark benefits not only manufacturers, but also shoe buyers and retailers: "In children's footwear, for example, we frequently find that shoes of the same size differ greatly within one and the same product batch", says the TÜV SÜD expert. "This does not apply to shoes with the 'Tested for Fit' certification mark."
