TÜV SÜD examines 3D TV: 'In-depth' tests at the 2011 IFA 2011
Where does the future of 3D television lie? Passive polarized lenses or active shutter lenses? A question that is the focus of attention at the IFA Home Entertainment section of the Internationale Funkausstellung, the major consumer electronics exhibition held in Berlin from 2 to 7 September 2011. TÜV SÜD's impartial image quality tests are making a key contribution to the development of this new technology. The TÜV SÜD tests can be followed live at the company's stand, Number 106 in Hall 7.1C.
The consumer electronics industry is concentrating its resources on developing 3-dimensional television, with the aim of enabling TV audiences to enjoy the viewing pleasure already experienced by millions of cinemagoers in the film 'Avatar' in their own homes. Many TV models with chipsets supporting 3D effects are already available. "In the not-too-distant future, consumers will be able to enjoy 3D functions without facing premium prices for the privilege", forecasts Klaus Ludwig, director of the Lighting/Multimedia Department at TÜV SÜD Product Service GmbH."This means that sooner or later, special quality marks for 3D televisions will establish a position for themselves.“
The coming years will see a watershed decision over which technology will prevail for 3D technology. Competing systems will be 'on parade' at the 2011 IFA, enabling visitors to explore the advantages and disadvantages of the various technologies for themselves. The active system using shutter glasses, to date the market leader, responds with extreme sensitivity to external frequencies such as those emitted by energy-saving light bulbs; this response is perceived by viewers as screen flicker. The passive polarized-lens system is free from flicker, but delivers poorer vertical resolution.
Measurable and visible differences in depth perception
TÜV SÜD's multimedia specialists help TV manufacturers to meet consumers' high expectations by supplying impartial measurements of image quality for 3D systems. At the IFA, these experts will give live presentations of the methods they use in quantifying 3D quality. An ongoing demonstration provides a fascinating impression of 3D effects and clearly shows the striking visual differences in depth perception. 3D glasses will be available at the TÜV SÜD stand for visitors to experience these differences for themselves.
Manufacturers, importers and placers on the market of TV sets seeking advice on issues related to 3D quality can arrange an appointment with the TÜV SÜD experts at their IFA stand - including a free entrance ticket to the exhibition. TÜV SÜD provides a broad range of services associated with TV sets, from electrical safety inspections and checks of visual and audio performance and individual functions down to quality tests of instruction manuals.
