Failure Analysis

Failure Analysis = Investigation of Cause + Prevention

Failure analyses show differences between a component’s actual and requested profile. This allows conclusions regarding the component’s behaviour in operation and remedial measures can be derived.
Special attention has to be paid to the elaboration of suitable preventive actions.

The goal of failure analyses is to detect the failure mechanism and to make recommendations regarding future failure prevention.

In this context TÜV SÜD offers the following testing methods:

  • Investigation of fractured surfaces and crevices caused by mechanical, chemical or thermal action using scanning electron microscopy (SEM)
  • Investigation of coatings, films and surface coverings using SEM
  • Chemical investigations with the EDX method using SEM
  • Metallographic investigations
  • On-site metallographic investigations for the non-destructive identification of the condition of systems and components
  • Mechanical-technological tests
  • Quantitative chemical investigations of metals using a vacuum emission spectrometer (VES)

Your advantages:

Combining related fields in our house (calculation, construction, process and system engineering as well as water and corrosion chemistry) we are able to offer

  • statements on the cause of the occurred failure
  • statements for rehabilitation and repair
  • statements for future failure prevention
  • interdisciplinary problem solutions from one source.

Our laboratories are accredited as per DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025 and as an inspectorate type A as per DIN EN ISO/IEC 17020.
