Stress Test

Maximizing safety - stress testing by TÜV SÜD

For newly constructed pipelines, stress testing conducted as a strength or acceptance test is an integral and cost-effective test procedure to achieve operationally reliable pipelines. Stress tests have proved their worth in particular as rehabilitation tests conducted on flawed older lines. After the pipelines have been checked by means of a stress test, they display perfect operational performance again.

The stress test is an extension of the water-pressure test. As a real strength and static load test, it imposes a load which approximates the actual yield point on all sections of a pipeline, without, however, exceeding the permissible strain in the weakest, defect-free pipes. Owing to the high loads imposed during the stress test, defects in the pipes are recognized and eliminated in good time before damage occurs.

For more than 35 years, the specialists at TÜV SÜD have successfully applied this cost-effective, one-stop test procedure in over 1,500 tests. Until today, neither rupture nor leakage has occurred on the tested pipelines during the subsequent operating period.
